National Palace is the residence of Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong. The building was built in 1928 and originally housing a millionaire, Mr. Chan Wing. During the reign of Japan from 1942-1945, the building was used as the Japanese Army Officers' Mess. After Japan surrendered, the building was purchased by the Selangor Government and after renovations it was made as the Palace of His Royal Highness the Sultan of Selangor until 1957.
The Federal Government has bought the castle in 1957 to become the National Palace, the residence of Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong and Seri Paduka Baginda Raja Permaisuri Agong. Since then, a number of changes and expansion is done. However, modifications in 1980 were as a whole, because this is the first time Coronation Ritual Seri Paduka Baginda Yang di-Pertuan Agong, was held at the National Palace. Previously coronation ceremony held in Dewan Tunku Abdul Rahman, Jalan Ampang, Kuala Lumpur.
